Decorating Ideas: “What Your Front Door Says About You”

Decorating ideas allow you not only to express yourself but to tell the world who you are.  Or, at least, who you think you are.  And what better way to share your personality with your neighbors than by flying your colors on your front door?  But some experts think the color of your front door could send the wrong message.

Decorating Idea: “Orange You An Extrovert?”

For instance, if you’re an introvert with an orange front door you may be sending the wrong message.  National color expert Kate Smith says you may want to do a little research before settling on a front door color. “An entry door painted a bold shade of orange says ‘I’m friendly, fun-loving and enjoy getting together with people’, so that’s probably not the best color for someone who has a more reserved personality,” Smith says. “Since the front door is the key feature on the house it’s a good place for people to let their personality shine through.”

Decorating Ideas: The Color Code

So here’s what the experts believe front door colors REALLY mean:

Red tells the world to “look at me?”  This bright color says that you’re not afraid of standing out or saying what’s on your mind.

White says that you prefer things that are organized, neat and clean.  Even if your home isn’t always that way…you probably wish it were.

Purple reveals a “free spirited” person who is comfortable taking risks, thinking differently, and dreaming big.  Some people believe that purple is also considered to be a rich or royal color–adding distinction to the home.

Blue tells people you are naturally at ease in most situations and people are attracted to your easygoing personality.

Black says you’re consistent, conservative, and reserved in your manner and your approach to color.  With a black door you’re saying that your design style is timeless rather than trendy.

Green tells the world that you have traditional values and enjoy being a member of the community.  Or that you like Kermit the frog.

Yellow says you have a personality similar to green, but a bit less traditional.  You’re most likely a leader or organizer of a group.  And likely you like sunflowers as well!

Now, don’t read too many personality traits into this one. Because if you have a black, green, and yellow front door it most likely means you live in Jamaica.

So, what do you think? How reflective of your personality is your front door? Is this hogwash or is there a grain of truth?

    Streamlined, but good advice.
BUT not so useful for me, right now, today – as there are hundreds of shades of red, and you’ve left out the main theme of your article – all the paint color details.
I want the color of YOUR red door, and have bought a half dozen “red” samples home to try & haven’t got it yet.

Well Debra, that is Benjamin Moore’s “Heritage Red”. As you can see it has a fair amount of Orange in it as well. Hope that helps!
