Contemporary Condo Kitchen Remodel

NARI Regional CoTY Winner

Geometry was the first order of business for a textile designer’s metropolitan kitchen.  She loves to cook and entertain; and given the small footprint, everything has “its place.”  Incorporating texture and a newly acquired sculpture were our driving design forces.

A few design challenges were presented:

  • Improve ventilation while retaining both the existing location and ducting size as per the Condo’s HOA requirements
  • Incorporate a second oven
  • Reduce the visual size of a structural column

By repurposing the underutilized pantry closet for the 2 wall ovens, the functional storage in the kitchen grew exponentially.  Creating an art niche in the oversized column (only half of which was structural), opened the kitchen to the rest of the home.

Due to the diminutive size of the kitchen, we found the perfect balance between subtle and bold by maintaining a monochromatic color scheme and integrating textures.  Patterns in the backsplash mimic the warp and weft yarns of textiles.  The woven vinyl wall covering imitates linen, while doubling as a durable surface for the back of the peninsula.  The gentle curve of the seating area contrasts subtly with the strong geometry that echoes throughout the kitchen.  The understated contrast continues in the play of light and dark between the dark stained quarter sawn walnut cabinets, the Nuovolato grey granite (at the peninsula), the creamy quartz countertop (at the range wall) and tile backsplash.

A perfect pairing of artistry and functionality!
