Portland Kitchen Remodel
This Tualatin area kitchen remodeling project features an improved layout and gorgeous styling.
Our clients were stranded in an awkwardly shaped kitchen that featured a peninsula between the kitchen and dining area, a chunk of angled wall that jutted out next to the French doors, and an angled island which made the space feel cramped.
“By removing the walk-in pantry closet and relocating the refrigerator, we really opened up the space,” says Sandi Erdman, Neil Kelly Company design consultant.

The homeowners wanted to open up the space, create a more functional kitchen and replace the three different types of flooring found on the main level (carpet, hardwood, and tile).
Design Challenge
“The island shape and size was a bit of a challenge,” Sandi concedes. Stone fabrication also influenced the size and shape of island. The homeowners wanted to maintain seating for four and also maximize their working countertop space. “We explored several different options and came up with a configuration the homeowners loved because it offers a great overall flow and maximizes their space.”

Design Solution
It all began with the client’s favorite color and the stunning Illusion Blue Quartzite countertop. “We began there and designed everything around it to truly personalize the space,” shares Sandi. The design features the desired seating area, a tall wall with pantry storage and beautiful aqua blue and light gray cabinets.
One great space-saving feature? A pop-up shelf for their mixer. The kitchen also features all Viking appliances for a cohesive look. And on gray Northwest days, the homeowners enjoy their built-in Meile coffee machine–part of a custom beverage station. Finally, new hardwood was installed throughout the first floor, helping the whole space feel more open and unified.
