Cabinet Tariffs in 2026: What Homeowners Should Know Before Remodeling

If you’re planning a kitchen or bathroom remodel, you may have heard about new tariffs affecting cabinets, vanities, and other wood products. Trade policy can feel distant and abstract, but it does have real-world implications for remodeling budgets and product choices.

At Neil Kelly, we believe our clients deserve clear, straightforward information, not speculation or alarm. Here’s what’s happening with cabinet tariffs in 2026, how it may affect your project, and what we’re doing to help you plan with confidence.

The Current State of Cabinet Tariffs

In late 2025, the federal government implemented tariffs on imported timber, lumber, and wood-derived products, including kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities. These policies were designed to strengthen domestic manufacturing and protect long-term supply chains.

Originally, imported cabinets and vanities were subject to a 25% tariff, with a planned increase to 50% scheduled for January 2026. That increase has now been delayed. The current 25% tariff will remain in place until at least January 1, 2027.

For homeowners, this delay matters. It provides price stability in the near term and helps avoid the sudden cost increases that were widely anticipated at the start of the year.

How This Affects Neil Kelly Cabinet Pricing

two women looking at cabinet door samplesWe help our clients choose cabinetry based on a balance of quality, customization, sustainability, and cost. One of our primary cabinet partners, Decor Cabinets, is based in Canada and has long offered exceptional craftsmanship at a competitive price point.

To help minimize the impact of tariffs, Decor has chosen to absorb half of the current tariff. That means instead of seeing a full 25% increase, our clients experience roughly a 12.5% adjustment. Even with this increase, these cabinets remain more cost-effective than many comparable alternatives.

It’s important to be transparent. If tariffs were to increase to 50% in the future, that level would likely be passed on to the market. The current delay helps everyone, including homeowners, plan with greater confidence.

What About U.S. and Local Cabinet Manufacturers?

an artisan creating custom cabinetsWe proudly work with U.S.-based cabinet manufacturers  as well, and are actively exploring additional options in Oregon and the broader Pacific Northwest. However, not all domestic cabinetry meets the standards our clients expect.

Our requirements include full customization, precision ordering, durable construction, low-toxicity and non-formaldehyde materials, and reliable delivery timelines. While we continue testing new regional manufacturers on smaller projects, finding local partners that consistently meet these benchmarks at scale remains challenging.

It’s also worth noting that domestic cabinets have not been immune to price increases. Many U.S. manufacturers rely on imported components, and tariffs on those parts, combined with inflation and labor costs, have led to rising prices across the board.

Vanities and Budget-Conscious Choices

Vanities are often treated differently from full custom cabinetry. In some cases, homeowners choose ready-made vanities to help manage costs. With the current tariff level, sales and promotions can still help offset price increases.

However, higher tariffs narrow the price gap between stock vanities and custom cabinetry. For many clients, this has shifted the conversation toward long-term value, durability, and customization rather than short-term savings alone.
