Oakway Transitional Kitchen and Wet Bar

A Kitchen Remodeled For Modern Living and Entertaining in Eugene, Oregon.

The owners of this 1954 ranch-style home near Eugene’s Oakway Golf Course were interested in remodeling their long and narrow kitchen. They wanted to open the floor plan, add an island and a wet bar, and somehow integrate the existing fireplace. They’d dreamed of a space with better flow for entertaining and better sight lines into their family room to keep an eye on their small children.

NK Eugene/Springfield Design Consultant Stefanie Rotella achieved the homeowners’ goals while layering in natural materials and thoughtful details that would give the space lasting character.

See before and after photos below, which illustrate why this project earned Stefanie and Neil Kelly the Pacific Northwest “Remodeler of the Year” award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Then, keep scrolling for the full story of how this transformation unfolded.

The Challenge

Creating a visual and physical connection to the family room required the removal of a load-bearing wall. While engineering partners determined whether we could put in a beam or have to settle for a post, Stefanie designed to accommodate either option without compromising layout or aesthetics. Complicating matters further, the existing kitchen featured a large brick fireplace that the homeowners wanted to keep, as well as a narrow floorplan that made incorporating an island with seating a challenge.

The Solution

The structural wall was ultimately replaced with a new 16-foot metal I-beam, allowing the design to remain completely open without the need for a post. To integrate the existing brick fireplace, shallow 12-inch-deep cabinetry was installed in front of the brick, paired with a Cement Elegance–clad gas insert and a deeper oven cabinet placed just to the side. This approach preserved the fireplace while maximizing storage and visually extending the kitchen into the space.

To address the long, narrow layout, the design uses full-height cabinetry to create visual balance and depth, anchoring the room before introducing an island with seating. This thoughtful reconfiguration allows the kitchen to function efficiently while feeling spacious and inviting.

One of the most distinctive elements of the remodel is the walnut wrapped I-beam. Because the walnut veneer was only available in eight-foot lengths, visible seams were unavoidable. Stefanie’s plan to hide to hide the seams was to add metal straps, but because of imperfections in the beam and veneer, the metal would not fit well enough. So, a custom solution was developed during production: faux metal straps expertly crafted from wood by NK’s carpentry team, resulting in a seamless, refined look that complements the surrounding walnut finishes.

Design Details

Custom features throughout the kitchen and bar area bring warmth and personality to the space. Rich walnut cabinetry is paired with custom green cabinets, stone and metal backsplash elements, tall pantries, panel-ready appliances, and appliance garages. At the bar, a custom walnut-and-resin backsplash adds a striking focal point, while the Cement Elegance board-stamped fireplace surround ties old and new elements together.

The final result is a highly customized kitchen that blends trending wood tones, deep greens, and black metal accents with a layout designed for everyday living and effortless entertaining.
