The Challenge
The homeowners wanted a bathroom that matched their home’s contemporary style with a distinctly glamorous edge. Neil Kelly’s Eugene team took on the project knowing the aesthetic ambitions were high and the behind-the-wall conditions would be complicated.
One shower wall was an exterior wall, requiring careful insulation work before any finishes could go in. Another shower wall backed up to laundry room plumbing, which meant coordinating new shower construction with existing utility runs. A kitchen drain from directly above the bathroom dropped into the space at a location that conflicted with the new layout. The water supply position interfered with plans for a half-wall of glass in the shower enclosure.
Below the floor, the bathroom sat below the foundation level. The bottom two feet of wall had concrete behind the drywall, which affected how cabinetry and fixtures could be mounted. A floating makeup cabinet needed structural support that standard wall framing could not provide. Each of these conditions required the design and build teams to problem-solve before the visible finishes could take shape.
The Solution
The build team addressed each structural challenge with targeted solutions. The exterior shower wall was furred out to allow proper insulation behind the storage niche. Plumbing vents at the laundry wall were moved as needed. Close coordination with the plumber allowed the kitchen drain to be rerouted away from the new layout.
Quartz lining at the edges of the shower enclosure provided a crisp transition from the large-format porcelain slabs to the drywall walls of the bathroom. The vanity wall was meticulously planned so that plumbing, lighting, medicine cabinets, and base cabinets aligned precisely with the marble tile pattern. Faucets sit centered within diamond-shaped tiles. Tile edging at the bottom, sides, and top of the feature wall minimized material waste during installation.
The floating makeup cabinet was secured by bolting steel angle to the concrete stem wall below the foundation line. Trim-free details carry through the room: a second layer of drywall and edge bead replaces traditional window casing, tile edge trim creates a trim-free door at the vanity wall, and a special narrow jamb achieves the same effect at the water closet. The freestanding vessel soaking tub, porcelain slab bench on a hidden metal frame, and book-matched porcelain corners with recessed storage niches deliver the polished, contemporary result.
