Custom Home Renovation in Southwest Portland

Neil Kelly’s in-house design consultant Tonya Bellusci helped our clients transform their entire house into a transitional-modern dwelling with contemporary touches and improved functionality.

Project Objectives and Client Wishlist

The entire house is over 4,000 square feet, and the project included two kitchens, four bathrooms, a primary bedroom, an office-bar hybrid area, stairs, and a basement-level living space.

Our client’s wishlist for this whole-house remodel included:

  • Better functionality
  • More modern look and feel
  • Updated finishes and fixtures
  • Basement living space

“The overall function and existing aesthetics of the space did not work for them,” says Bellusci. The renovation aimed to make the house look and feel more modern, with clean lines and easy transitions. Our client also needed to plan for her parents to move into the basement-level living space.

Project Planning and Design Challenges

Like most renovation projects, this one had a few hurdles. Some of the main challenges included scheduling issues, getting custom cabinetry built to our specifications in a timely manner, and having to rechoose and reorder tiles.

Figuring out the layout and installation of the quartz hood and backsplash in the main kitchen was an obstacle, too, as it was crucial to have the texture and “movement” in the stone flow seamlessly from piece to piece.

Design Solutions

Solutions to our project challenges mostly involved constant communication with the client about scheduling and making a few necessary changes to some of the finishes. For the hood and backsplash, we worked directly with the vendor and installation team to ensure a successful outcome.

Special Features, Customizations, and Finished Results
