Triangle Lake Craftsman Whole House Remodel
Project Overview
A Craftsman home on 70 acres near Triangle Lake, Oregon, originally built as a passion project in the 1990s, received a 1,700-square-foot, two-phase renovation. Design consultant Stefanie Rotella overhauled the kitchen and converted a completely unfinished second story into a primary suite, guest suite, additional bedroom, and laundry room, all under heavily sloped rooflines.

The Challenge
This Craftsman-style home sits on 70 acres of property near Triangle Lake, outside Eugene. The homeowners’ father built it in the 1990s as a personal project. When the current owners took possession, the first floor was finished but the kitchen needed a major overhaul. The entire second story was raw, unfinished space.
The kitchen measured roughly 13 feet wide. The homeowners cook and entertain regularly, so they needed an island or peninsula with a sitting bar plus significant storage. In a kitchen that narrow, fitting a sitting bar without blocking the walkway into the room required careful dimensioning.
Upstairs, the heavily sloped roofline was the dominant constraint. Three bedrooms—two with ensuite bathrooms—a landing, and a laundry room all had to fit within a footprint where usable square footage dropped sharply at the walls. Structural posts, beams, and knee bracing naturally divided the space, meaning the room layout had to work around fixed structural elements rather than the other way around.
The Solution
Stefanie chose a U-shaped double-galley layout for the kitchen with a long, narrow island running down the center. This arrangement opened three walls for cabinetry, countertop workspace, and tall pantry storage while allowing traffic to flow around the island so multiple cooks can work side by side.
Upstairs, the strategy was to let the sloped rooflines dictate where things went rather than fight them. Low-ceiling areas became functional pockets — a shower bench tucked under a slope, deep closet drawers built into knee-wall spaces. Each bedroom was designed around the existing structural posts and bracing, turning potential obstacles into natural room dividers.
The material palette blends Craftsman tradition with current finishes. Custom millwork was milled from wood salvaged directly from the property, and the original exposed ceiling beams were preserved and finished to remain a defining feature of the upper level. The two-phase approach let the family live in the home during construction, completing the kitchen first and then moving to the second-story buildout.
